Ramadan 1447 Moon-Sighting Confusion – Reminders on Unity

1. True Meaning of Unity

Unity is essential in Islam when it comes to following the Qur’an and Sunnah.

However, unity does not mean that we must all follow:

         •       The opinion of a single scholar,

         •       A particular organization, or

         •       The decision of one particular foreign country,

especially when that opinion is challenged by basic principles and by experts in the relevant scientific fields.

There is no obligation of unity in matters where the scholars of the Ummah differ based on the Qur’an and Sunnah, or where there are different valid methodologies of following them.

2. Unity Through Mutual Respect

We should unite upon:

         •       Respecting each other’s opinions regarding deen and ‘ibadah — even within families.

         •       Limiting academic discussions to appropriate times and proper settings.

         •       Respecting the scholars and imams of all views within Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama‘ah, even when we do not agree with them.

         •       Avoiding suspicion about others’ intentions unless there is clear proof that we can answer for before Allah.

         •       Staying away from arguments, debates, backbiting, and harming the dignity of others.

Protecting the honor and rights of fellow Muslims is far more important than having Ramadan or Eid on the same day.

3. What Should You Do When There Is اختلاف (Difference)?

         •       Follow a muttaqi, Sunnah-practicing scholar whom you trust consistently in all religious matters.

         •       Do not follow personal desires or “shop” for fatwas.

         •       If you luckily or unluckily do not usually follow a specific scholar, then follow the decision of the local masjid you regularly attend.

         •       Respect the positions of all scholars and the policies of all Islamic organizations, even when they differ from your own, knowing that they work for the sake of Allah.

         •       Educate yourself by learning about the relevant hadith, fiqh, and astronomical aspects of this issue.

4. No Arguments in ‘Ibadah

Ramadan is the month of patience and self-control.

Many hadith emphasize avoiding arguments and quarrels.

Do not allow these differences to affect your Ramadan and your worship.

JazakAllahu khayran for your understanding.

Ramadan Kareem.
