Al-Qunut in Witr salah throughout the year and performing Qunut before the Ruku.

1. Hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari (1002)

قال عاصم سَأَلْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ عَنِ الْقُنُوتِ، فَقَالَ: قَدْ كَانَ الْقُنُوتُ. قُلْتُ: قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ أَوْ بَعْدَهُ؟ قَالَ: قَبْلَهُ. قَالَ: فَإِنَّ فُلَانًا أَخْبَرَنِي عَنْكَ أَنَّكَ قُلْتَ بَعْدَ الرُّكُوعِ؟ فَقَالَ: كَذَبَ، إِنَّمَا قَنَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ الرُّكُوعِ شَهْرًا، أُرَاهُ كَانَ بَعَثَ قَوْمًا يُقَالُ لَهُمُ الْقُرَّاءُ، زُهَاءَ سَبْعِينَ رَجُلًا، إِلَى قَوْمٍ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ دُونَ أُولَئِكَ، وَكَانَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَهْدٌ، فَقَنَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَهْرًا يَدْعُو عَلَيْهِمْ».

صحيح البخاري ١٠٠٢

Narrated by Asim rahimahullah“I asked Anas bin Malik raziyallahu anhu about the Qunut, and he said: ‘Indeed, there was Qunut.’ I asked: ‘Was it before ruku or after it?’ He replied: ‘Before it.’

 I said: ‘Someone informed me that you said it was after ruku?’ He replied: ‘They were mistaken; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ only performed Qunut after the bowing for one month. I believe he had sent a group called Al-Qurra (the reciters), about seventy men, to a group of polytheists who had a treaty with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ [but they betrayed it]. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Qunut for one month invoking curses upon them.'”

2. Hadith from Sunan an-Nasa’i (1699) & Sunan Ibn Majah (1182)

عَنْ ‌أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ «كَانَ يُوتِرُ بِثَلَاثِ رَكَعَاتٍ، كَانَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الْأُولَى بِ ﴿سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى﴾، وَفِي الثَّانِيَةِ بِ ﴿قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ﴾، وَفِي الثَّالِثَةِ بِ ﴿قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ﴾، وَيَقْنُتُ قَبْلَ الرُّكُوعِ، فَإِذَا فَرَغَ قَالَ عِنْدَ فَرَاغِهِ: سُبْحَانَ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، يُطِيلُ فِي آخِرِهِنَّ».

Narrated by Ubayy bin Ka’b raziyallahu anhu: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray Witr with three units (rak’ahs). In the first, he would recite Surah Al-A’la. In the second, Surah Al-Kafirun. In the third, Surah Al-Ikhlas.

He would perform Qunut before ruku. When he finished, he would say: ‘Glory be to the Sovereign, the Most Holy’ (Subhanal-Malikil-Quddus) three times, elongating the words in the last time.”

The practice of the sahaba raziyallahu anhum

Omar raziyallahu anhu

المصنف ابن أبي شيبة ٧٠٧٩

” Al-Aswad bin Yazid says that, Umar [bin Al-Khattab] performed Qunut in the Witr before ruku.”

Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaibah, Hadith 7079:

عن علقمة أن ابن مسعود وأصحاب النبي ﷺ كانوا يقنتون في الوتر قبل الركوع

المصنف ابن أبي شيبة ٧٠٩٠

” Alqamah says that, Ibn Mas’ud and the sahaba of the Prophet ﷺ used to perform Qunut in the Witr before ruku.”
